OPEC Boss Barkindo Dies in Abuja Nigeria

Mohammed Barkindo the Nigeria born secretary general of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries OPEC has died, according to a Twitter statement issued by the GMD of the NNPC Ltd Mallam Mele Kyari on Wednesday morning.

He died yesterday Tuesday July 5, 2022 at around 11pm in Abuja few hours after delivering a keynote address the 2022 Nigeria Oil and Gas (NOG) Conference and Exhibition. He was the Honorary Chairman of the 21st edition of the conference whose theme for this year is Finding the Nigerian Energy Mix for Sustainable Economic Growth. Moreso, his death comes a few days to the expiration of his term as the 13th Secretary general of OPEC on August 1 2022, after six eventful years (stated from August 1 2016) as its elmsman.

 Born in Yola Nigeria on April 20 1959, Barkindo aged 63, will be greatly missed by the international oil and gas community, OPEC, his home country and by his immediate family.

While at OPEC as boss, Barkindo took many bold steps to stabilise global oil and gas ⛽ prices during the oil market downturn of 2015 - 2016, and he also led OPEC through the historical global crash in oil prices occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 through laudable initiatives like Charter of Cooperation (COC) and Declaration of Cooperation (DOC). This feat has worn him international accolades from Venezuela to Iraq to Austria.

Although the circumstance surrounding his death is not clear, Barkindo was buried in the evening at about 4pm in his hometown Yola, Adamawa state on Wednesday July 6, 2022 per Islamic rites.

Prior to his appointment as the 28th Secretary general of OPEC, Barkindo was previously GMD of NNPC from 2009 - 2010, Nigeria's Petroleum minister, and deputy managing director of NLNG, a joint venture between NNPC, Eni, Shell, and TotalEnergies. He was the fourth Nigerian to hold that office since the inception of OPEC in September 1960 in Baghdad, Iraq.

However, Barkindo was to be succeeded by Kuwait's oil minister as the 29th Secretary general of OPEC come August 1, 2022.
